EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving from 1811 depicts Meriwether Lewis, an American explorer who played a crucial role in the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. The print is based on an account by Patrick Gass, one of the members of this historic journey. Meriwether Lewis was born in 1774 and tragically passed away in 1809 at the age of just 35. However, his legacy as a pioneering explorer lives on through this remarkable artwork. In the image, Lewis is portrayed with an air of determination and adventure, embodying the spirit that drove him to explore uncharted territories. The Lewis and Clark expedition took place between 1804 and 1806, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore and map out the newly acquired western territory of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase. Alongside William Clark, Meriwether Lewis led a group of men through treacherous terrain, encountering Native American tribes, wildlife encounters, and challenging weather conditions. This wood engraving provides us with a glimpse into history – it allows us to visualize these brave men who ventured into unknown lands for discovery and knowledge. It serves as a reminder of their courage and perseverance in expanding our understanding of America's vast wilderness during its early years.
