The old centre of Bergen (Bryggen), Norway
The city of Bergen was founded in 1070. In 1360 a Kontor of the Hanseatic League was established there, and as the town developed into an important trading centre, the wharfs were improved. The administrative buildings of Bryggen housed clerks from many areas, especially Germany. The main trade was dried cod from Northern Norway in return for cereals from mainland Europe. The oldest part of Bergen, which is called Bryggen (Norwegian, The Wharf ), is a series of Hanseatic commercial buildings lining the eastern side of the fjord coming into Bergen, Norway.Bryggen was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the old centre of Bergen, known as Bryggen, in all its historical glory. Dating back to 1070, Bergen holds a rich history as an important trading center. In 1360, it became home to a Kontor of the Hanseatic League, attracting clerks from various regions, particularly Germany. The image showcases the iconic Hanseatic commercial buildings that line the fjord's eastern side. These structures served as administrative hubs for trade between Northern Norway and mainland Europe. Dried cod from the north was exchanged for cereals from across Europe. Bryggen's significance is further highlighted by its inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1979. The vibrant colors and architectural details of these historic buildings are beautifully captured in this photograph by Frans Sellies. As you gaze at this idyllic scene, you can almost imagine the bustling activity that once took place along these waterfront streets. The townscape exudes charm with its tree-lined embankment and rows of buildings stretching into the distance. A yacht glides peacefully through the calm waters nearby while incidental people add a sense of life to this timeless setting. This print transports you to a bygone era where history comes alive against Bergen's picturesque backdrop. Whether you have visited Bergen or dream of exploring its historic treasures one day, this print serves as a reminder of Bryggen's enduring legacy and its place among Norway's most cherished landmarks.
