EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable copperplate engraving from the 17th century, depicting a coat of arms roll. Created in 1673, this intricate artwork features the coats of arms of individuals who contributed to its completion, beginning with King Charles II. Each page within this magnificent work contains 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. The two coats of arms displayed in this particular image are found on folio (page) 23. During that era, certain peculiarities existed within written English. For instance, the letter 's' was represented by an elongated 'f', while 'ss' appeared as 'fs'. Additionally, abbreviations were commonly used; for example, 'com' stood for county. The accompanying texts shed light on the identities and backgrounds of these benefactors. The first coat of arms belongs to George Castle from St Martin-in-the-Fields, Middlesex. He was not only a Doctor of Phisick (Medicine), but also a distinguished Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). Furthermore, he authored "The Chymical Galenist" showcasing his expertise in alchemy and medicine. The second coat of arms represents Robert Leighton hailing from Wattlesborough in Shropshire County. It is important to note that this refers to an individual rather than a company or commercial entity. Preserved through time and now available as a stunning print at Fine Art Storehouse courtesy Whiteway's collection - immerse yourself in history with this exquisite depiction capturing centuries-old heraldry and honoring those who played significant roles during their era.
