Berlin Wall Memorial

A closeup of the Berlin Wall memorial, made up of the remnants of a concrete barrier that physically divided the city of Berlin from 1961 to 1989. The wall was built by the German Democratic Republiic, colloquially known as " East Germany", starting on August 13, 1961. Demolition began on June 13, 1990 and was completed two years later. The wall included guard towers which were manned by armed guards, ready to kill anyone who violated the " death strip" on the east side of the Wall. Only small sections of the wall remain as a stark reminder of a dark page in German history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the essence of the Berlin Wall Memorial, serving as a poignant reminder of a tumultuous period in German history. The closeup reveals the remnants of the concrete barrier that once physically divided the city of Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Built by the German Democratic Republic, commonly known as "East Germany" this imposing wall stood as a symbol of political oppression and separation. The image showcases not only the physical structure but also highlights its significance through historical context. Guard towers, manned by armed personnel ready to enforce strict border control measures, loomed over what was infamously called the "death strip" on the east side of the Wall. This chilling detail serves as a stark reminder of how far people were willing to go to maintain this division. Although most sections have been demolished since reunification efforts began in June 1990, small fragments remain scattered throughout Berlin's landscape—a testament to resilience and an enduring symbol against tyranny. Photographer Morten Falch Sortland skillfully captures both beauty and tragedy in this photograph, allowing viewers to reflect on past struggles while appreciating how far Germany has come since those dark days. As we gaze upon this print, let us remember that it is our collective responsibility never to forget such historic injustices so that they may never be repeated again.
