EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph from 1880 showcases the delicate beauty of butterflies in all their glory. The print features a stunning array of species, each meticulously detailed and brought to life through vibrant colors. Starting from the top left corner, we are introduced to the Lobster Moth with its unique lobster-like appearance, followed by the Lappet butterfly with its intricate patterns resembling oak leaves. Moving down, we encounter the Oak Processionary, known for its distinctive processionary behavior. In the center of this enchanting composition is the Apollo butterfly, a majestic creature adorned with striking black and white markings. To its right is the Pine-tree Lappet, showcasing nature's perfect camouflage against pine trees. Continuing clockwise, we come across the Vine Hawk-Moth gracefully perched on a leaf while displaying its elegant wingspan. Next is the Green-banded Urania fluttering amidst lush foliage - an exquisite sight indeed. Finally, occupying two spots on this mesmerizing print are variations of one of nature's most beloved creatures -the Painted Lady butterfly. These graceful insects add a touch of vibrancy and charm to any garden they grace. Preserved within my personal archive for over a century, this hand-colored lithograph serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a testament to our fascination with these winged wonders. A true collector's item that celebrates nature's boundless creativity and reminds us of our enduring connection to these ethereal creatures.
