EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Coronation Chair with the Stone of Scone, housed within the grand Westminster Abbey in London. Crafted specifically for King Edward I in 1296, this ancient chair holds great historical significance. The Stone of Scone, brought from Scotland by Edward I himself, was placed upon this regal seat during coronations. It is worth noting that every English Monarch since Edward II has been crowned in this very chair, except for Edward V and Edward VIII. The engraving beautifully captures the intricate details of this Gothic-style masterpiece. The woodcut illustration exudes a sense of majesty and antiquity as it transports us back to a bygone era. This image, created between 1870-1879 as part of "Old & New London" by Walter Thornbury and Edward Walford, offers a glimpse into the social history and cultural heritage associated with both Scottish and English traditions. Although now returned to Scotland in 1996, the Stone's presence within Westminster Abbey remains an enduring symbol of British royalty. As we gaze at this sepia-toned depiction, we are reminded of its significance as a famous landmark steeped in centuries-old tradition. Through its elegant portrayal inside the abbey's hallowed halls, we are transported to a time when kings were crowned amidst grandeur and splendor – an enchanting window into England's rich past.
