EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Sacrifice and Euphoria of Noah" a remarkable fresco painted by Paolo Uccello in 1446-8. The artwork, measuring 27.7x54 cm, can be found at the Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy. Part of a collection of frescoes displayed in the cloister bays, this particular piece is one of two attributed to Uccello. It depicts the momentous event of the Great Flood and its aftermath: as the waters recede, Noah's sons Sem and Japhet tenderly cover their father with clothing on the right side of the composition. In contrast, Cham reads Noah with contempt, symbolizing scorn or indifference towards his patriarch. Another notable fresco within this series portrays the Creation of Animals and Adam above it while also featuring Eve's creation and Original Sin below. These precious frescoes were carefully removed from their original location on the wall in 1940 for preservation purposes and are now housed at the Santa Maria Novella Museum. Uccello's mastery shines through his meticulous attention to detail and skillful portrayal of emotions within this Florentine School masterpiece. The painting beautifully captures both sacrifice and euphoria as well as highlights themes such as faith, family bonds, divine intervention, and human fallibility. This stunning image is made available by www. bridgemanimages. com for non-commercial use only but allows us to appreciate Uccello's artistic brilliance throughout history.
