The Meeting, c. 1746

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by Pietro Longhi that offers a glimpse into the clandestine world of 18th-century Venetian society. Set against the backdrop of Venice Carnival, the scene unfolds outside a fashionable café in the arcade of the Procuratorie Nuove. In this intriguing composition, a lady stands before us, her face unveiled and her bauta mask removed from under her tricorn hat. As she awaits an approaching gentleman, their eyes meet with anticipation and secrecy. Behind them, a fitta palchi presents them with keys, symbolizing their rendezvous in one of the theater boxes. Longhi's masterful brushstrokes capture not only the intricate lace details on the lady's attire but also evoke an atmosphere filled with intrigue and romance. The rococo style adds to the allure of this amorous encounter as it transports viewers back to an era known for its lavish entertainment and masked revelry. Part of a series commissioned by Florence's Gambardi family, "The Meeting" showcases Longhi's ability to depict intimate moments within Venetian society while maintaining his signature attention to detail. Displayed at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, this print invites us to immerse ourselves in 18th-century Italy and witness firsthand how love blossoms amidst secrecy during Venice Carnival.
