EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a remarkable portrait of John Eardley Wilmot, painted by Benjamin West in 1812. Wilmot, an English judge and Chief Justice of the Common Pleas from 1766 to 1771, is depicted with great detail and poise on a canvas measuring 105.4x148 cm. This exquisite piece is housed at the Yale Center for British Art as part of the Paul Mellon Collection. Intriguingly, behind Wilmot stands another artwork by Benjamin West titled "Allegory of Britannia Receiving the American Loyalists". Created between 1783 and 1788, this lost original painting portrays loyalists gathered around a table holding the crown of England. Among them is none other than John Eardley Wilmot himself, extending his welcome to these displaced individuals. The figures representing religion and justice stand nearby while notable refugees William Franklin and Sir William Pepperrell are also present. Published in 1815 as part of "Historical view of the Commission for Enquiring into the Losses, Services and Claims of the American Loyalists" an engraving based on West's allegorical painting can be found within its pages. Fortunately, this smaller copy serves as a testament to West's original masterpiece. This print not only showcases Wilmot's distinguished presence but also provides us with a glimpse into history through West's symbolic representation of Britain receiving American loyalists after their tumultuous separation from Great Britain during colonial times.
