EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a dramatic moment during a school excursion in a German village. Five young people, filled with joy and excitement, had taken to the frozen pond for an afternoon of skating. However, their carefree adventure quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal when the ice beneath them gave way. In an instant, the children found themselves plunging into the icy waters. Panic ensued as they struggled to stay afloat amidst cracking ice and freezing temperatures. But their misfortune did not go unnoticed. The master accompanying them on this outing bravely leaped into action without hesitation. Determined to save his students from certain danger, he rushed towards them but tragically fell into the crevasse himself. Three of the five boys he intended to rescue were lost alongside him in this heartbreaking turn of events. This powerful illustration was created by Achille Beltrame for Courier Sunday on February 9th, 1930. It serves as a reminder of both heroism and tragedy that can unfold within mere moments. Through this artwork, we witness the fragility of life and how unexpected circumstances can forever alter our paths. It is also a testament to the selflessness displayed by individuals who risk everything in order to protect others. Let us remember those brave souls who sacrificed their lives while attempting to save others on that fateful day at the frozen pond in Germany's serene countryside.
