Canberra PR9

Pictured during a routine sortie, aircraft WJ874 was painted to represent the first prototype Canberra, VN799, when it flew for the first time on 13 May 1949 at Warton airfield, where it had been built. A total of 1347 Canberras were produced and of the 925 built in the UK 773 were delivered to the RAF.
The Canberra PR9 will be formally retired from RAF service in 2006. The aircrafts illustrious and extensive career with the RAF will end when the last four Canberra PR9s of 39 (part of 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit (PRU)) land at RAF Marham for the final time.
When the PR9 lands for the last time, Canberras will have been in continuous front-line service with the RAF for a staggering 55 years, or nearly two-thirds of the RAFs entire existence

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Canberra PR9 during a routine sortie, showcasing its sleek and powerful presence in the sky. Painted to pay homage to the first prototype Canberra, VN799, this aircraft holds historical significance as it took flight for the very first time on May 13th, 1949 at Warton airfield where it was constructed. With an impressive production of 1347 Canberras, this particular model played a crucial role in the Royal Air Force (RAF), with 773 out of the 925 built in the UK being delivered to them. However, after an illustrious and extensive career serving alongside RAF personnel, the Canberra PR9 is set to be formally retired from service in 2006. The final chapter of this remarkable aircraft's journey will conclude when four remaining Canberra PR9s from 39 Squadron (part of 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit) make their last landing at RAF Marham. This marks an end to Canberras' continuous front-line service with the RAF for an astonishing duration of over five decades - nearly two-thirds of the entire existence of this esteemed organization. As we admire this awe-inspiring image captured by SAC A K Benson from Armed Forces, we are reminded not only of technological advancements but also pay tribute to those who have operated these jets throughout history. The Canberra PR9 has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on aviation history and will forever be remembered as a symbol of excellence within reconnaissance capabilities for years to come.
