EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Camp of the 3rd Division, 15 July 1855" by William Simpson takes us back to the Crimean War era. The watercolour and pencil artwork beautifully captures the scene with intricate details and vibrant colors. In the foreground, we see soldiers from different regiments using cannon balls as bowls, showcasing their resourcefulness in making do with what they have. This small detail gives us a glimpse into the daily life and ingenuity of these brave men during wartime. The artist's attention to detail is evident not only in depicting the soldiers but also in capturing the dark, stormy sky moving in from the right side of the picture. It is said that Simpson had to seek refuge inside one of the tents belonging to the 63rd (West Suffolk) Regiment of Foot to complete his painting due to this approaching storm. Accompanying this print was a detailed key showing how different regiments were distributed within the camp. This publication aimed to provide satisfaction for those who had personal connections with these camps either through loved ones serving or fallen heroes. Reproduced as Plate 12 in Simpson's book "A Seat of War in East" published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi, London, in 1856, this artwork stands as a testament to both historical significance and artistic excellence.
