In 1706 King Louis XIV of France wanted to avenge the defeats inflicted on him in 1704 by the Grand Alliance during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-13). Marshal Villeroi was therefore pushed into leaving the safety of the lines of Brabant and crossed the River Dyle with 60, 000 men. On 23 May 1706, the Duke of Marlborough attacked him at Ramillies. Marlborough put pressure on the enemy left wing, causing the French to reinforce it with troops from their centre and right. He then shifted his reserves to the right. After a close-fought cavalry battle, in which Marlborough himself led a counter-charge, the French were routed. They lost 18, 000 men to MarlboroughAs 3, 600. The victory enabled Marlborough to drive the French from almost the whole of the Spanish Netherlands.); eNational Army Museum; French, out of copyright

The Battle of Ramillies, 23 May 1706
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating and historically significant line engraving that captures the intensity and heroism of one of the most decisive battles in European history. Created by Louis Laguerre and engraved by Claude Du Bosc, this colored print showcases the dramatic clash between two formidable forces during the War of the Spanish Succession. In this artwork, we witness Marshal Villeroi's daring decision to leave his secure position in Brabant with an army of 60,000 men to avenge previous defeats suffered at the hands of the Grand Alliance. However, little did he know that he would face off against one of history's greatest military strategists – Duke Marlborough. The image vividly portrays Marlborough's tactical brilliance as he applies pressure on the enemy left wing before shifting his reserves to launch a devastating attack from their right flank. The battle unfolds with fierce cavalry charges led by Marlborough himself, resulting in a resounding victory for him and his troops. This historic triumph not only saw France lose 18,000 soldiers compared to Marlborough's minimal casualties but also marked a turning point in the war. With this victory at Ramillies, Marlborough was able to drive French forces out from almost all territories in Spanish Netherlands. "The Battle of Ramillies" print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a testament to human resilience and strategic genius amidst conflict. It allows us to reflect upon historical events that shaped nations while honoring those who fought valiantly for their cause.
