EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Tranter . 450 inch double-action centre-fire revolver, dating back to 1878. The Italian School of the 16th century captured this iconic firearm, which is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. During a time when pistol shortages were prevalent due to conflicts such as the 2nd Afghan War and Zulu War, the War Department made a significant purchase of 1,000 Tranter revolvers from the open market. These pistols played a crucial role in arming soldiers for campaigns like the Zulu war. Notably, they were designed to fire . 450 caliber ammunition approved by the Government. Marked with Enfield inspection marks and bearing symbols such as A W DA (War Department) and A non-interchangeableA, these hand-made pistols possessed unique characteristics that set them apart from later machine-made government revolvers. Their parts could not be exchanged between weapons due to their individual craftsmanship. The historical significance of this Tranter revolver lies not only in its functionality but also in its representation of an era marked by conflict and scarcity. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity during times of adversity while honoring an essential piece of military history held within one of London's esteemed museums.
