Light companies tended to consist of the fastest and most agile soldiers of a regiment. In 1771 a light company was added to every British infantry battalion. The leather helmet which light company soldiers wore was practical and lightweight, but still strong enough to protect the wearer from sword and tomahawk blows. As well as helmets, light company troops were distinguished from other companies in their battalion by shorter coats and gaiters.
The 9th served in North America between 1776 and 1783, taking part in many of the major battles of the conflict. A large part of the regiment was captured at Saratoga in 1777 and interned for the duration of the American War of Independence (1775-1783).); eNational Army Museum; British, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an officer's leather helmet from the light company of the 9th Regiment of Foot, dating back to around 1780. The British School in the 18th Century beautifully captured this piece, now housed at the National Army Museum in London. During this era, light companies were composed of agile and swift soldiers within a regiment. In order to distinguish themselves, these troops donned shorter coats and gaiters alongside their practical leather helmets. Crafted with both strength and lightweight properties in mind, these helmets provided ample protection against sword strikes and tomahawk blows. The 9th Regiment of Foot played a significant role during its service in North America between 1776 and 1783. Engaging in numerous major battles throughout the American War of Independence (1775-1783), they left an indelible mark on history. Notably, a large portion of the regiment was captured at Saratoga in 1777 and remained interned for the duration of the conflict. This remarkable artifact not only represents military fashion trends but also serves as a testament to the bravery exhibited by those who wore it on their heads while facing perilous situations on foreign soil. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we can admire this historical treasure today without any commercial restrictions or limitations.
