Death of Major Pierson and defeat of the French troops in the Island of Jersey

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This coloured lithograph, created by John Singleton Copley and printed by Le Breton in 1781, depicts a pivotal moment in history - the death of Major Peirson and the defeat of French troops on the Island of Jersey. In January 1781, during the American War of Independence, France joined forces with the United States after their victory at Saratoga. Seeking to expand their influence, around 700 French soldiers launched an attack on Jersey. However, they were met with fierce resistance from both British garrison troops and local militia. The battle that ensued was short but brutal. The image captures this intense struggle as soldiers clash amidst billowing smoke and falling flags. In a tragic turn of events, Major Peirson valiantly led his men into combat but lost his life in the process. This print serves as a poignant reminder not only of this specific event but also highlights the sacrifices made by individuals during times of conflict. It immortalizes Major Peirson's bravery while commemorating the ultimate triumph over adversity. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this artwork stands as a testament to historical moments that shaped nations and honors those who fought for their cause. Its vivid colors and intricate details transport viewers back to this significant chapter in history where lives were lost but victories won against all odds.
