This stunning illustration from the Dore Bible depicts a heartbreaking scene from the Old Testament story of Jepthah and his daughters. In this powerful image, we see the moment when Jepthah realizes the devastating consequences of his vow to sacrifice whatever comes out of his house first. His beloved daughter emerges, unaware of her fate, as he grapples with the weight of his promise to God. The expressions on the faces of Jepthah and his daughters convey a mix of sorrow, resignation, and determination in the face of an impossible situation. As we gaze upon this timeless artwork, we are reminded of the complexities of faith, duty, and sacrifice that have echoed through history for centuries.
