Sir John Gell, c. 1650 (oil on copper)

5927575 Sir John Gell, c.1650 (oil on copper) by Unknown Artist, (17th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Sir John Gell (1593-1671) was High Sheriff of Derbyshire when he was commissioned as colonel to raise a Parliamentarian regiment during the English Civil War (1642-1651). His regiment took part in several engagements including the sieges of Chester and Lichfield and the Battle of Hopton Heath.
In 1645, Sir John failed to intercept the KindAs troops in their flight from Naseby to Leicester. This gave rise to suspicions about his allegiances and he was accused of taking part in plots against the Commonwealth and was committed to the Tower of London in 1650. Gell was tried by the High Court and condemned to forfeit his estates. However, he was released in 1652 and obtained a full pardon the following year.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Sir John Gell, captured in a stunning oil on copper painting dating back to around 1650. The unknown artist skillfully portrays Gell's commanding presence and noble stature, evoking a sense of power and authority. Sir John Gell, who held the esteemed position of High Sheriff of Derbyshire during his lifetime, played a significant role in the tumultuous English Civil War. Commissioned as colonel to raise a Parliamentarian regiment, he led his troops into several pivotal engagements such as the sieges of Chester and Lichfield, as well as the Battle of Hopton Heath. However, despite his valiant efforts for the Parliamentary cause, doubts arose regarding Gell's loyalty when he failed to intercept King Charles I's forces fleeing from Naseby to Leicester in 1645. These suspicions ultimately led to accusations against him for participating in plots against the Commonwealth. In 1650, Gell was imprisoned in London's infamous Tower while awaiting trial by the High Court. Although initially condemned to forfeit his estates due to these allegations, Sir John Gell experienced an unexpected turn of fate. Released from captivity in 1652 and granted a full pardon just one year later, he emerged from this dark period with renewed hope and determination. This remarkable portrait immortalizes Sir John Gell's complex journey through history - a man whose allegiances were questioned but ultimately vindicated - leaving behind an enduring legacy that continues to captivate art
