The volunteer Yeomanry cavalry units were originally formed in the 1790s as a response to the invasion threat from Revolutionary France. However, they were also used to support the civil authority to put down political and social disturbances. This continued until the mid-19th century when police forces took over this role. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an unidentified Welsh Yeomanry helmet from the years 1830-1840. The intricate design and craftsmanship of this metal helmet are truly remarkable, reflecting the skill and artistry of the Welsh school in the 19th century. The origins of these volunteer Yeomanry cavalry units can be traced back to the late 18th century when they were established as a response to the threat of invasion from Revolutionary France. However, their role extended beyond military defense, as they also supported civil authorities in maintaining order during times of political and social unrest. It wasn't until the mid-19th century that police forces assumed this responsibility, allowing yeomanry units to focus more on local defense efforts. This particular helmet symbolizes a significant era in Welsh history when brave men volunteered to protect their communities and uphold law and order. Its presence serves as a reminder of their dedication and commitment to safeguarding their homeland. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this artifact offers us a glimpse into Wales' rich heritage and its connection with military traditions. As we admire its intricate details, we pay homage to those who wore it proudly centuries ago – valiant individuals who stood ready to defend their land against any threat that may have loomed on the horizon.
