by Wilson, Richard (1713/14-82); 105.5x120.5 (framed) 89.8x105.5 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: In the distance the peak of Cader Idris is shown, while riders in the foreground descend toward the river Mawddach. Although almost all of Wilsons earlier pictures of Wales suggest some association with that countrys heroic past, here the emphasis is on the pleasing beauty of the land. Another version of this picture is in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
Richard Wilson was the first major British artist to specialize in landscape, a focus he pursued intently after a visit to Italy in 1750-6. The countryside around Rome, with its rich associations of ancient grandeur, inspired him to look at landscape as a source of poetry. Back in England his Italian landscapes, which appealed to his patrons (mostly English noblemen) were a great success. He then applied a similar approach to his English and Welsh scenes, treating them as vehicles for ideas and emotions.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Richard Wilson's masterpiece, "Cader Idris, with the Mawddach River" painted around 1774. The oil on canvas painting measures 105.5x120.5 cm when framed and is currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The artwork depicts a breathtaking scene where Cader Idris, a prominent peak in Wales, stands majestically in the distance while riders gracefully descend towards the tranquil Mawddach River. Unlike many of Wilson's earlier works that evoke Wales' heroic past, this painting focuses primarily on capturing the serene beauty of the land. Richard Wilson was renowned as Britain's first major artist to specialize in landscape paintings after his transformative visit to Italy between 1750 and 1756. Inspired by Rome's ancient grandeur and poetic landscapes, he brought a similar approach back to England and Wales. Wilson viewed landscapes not merely as visual representations but as vehicles for conveying ideas and emotions. His Italian landscapes gained immense popularity among English noblemen who appreciated their allure. He then applied this successful formula to his English and Welsh scenes. It is worth noting that another version of this remarkable piece can be found at Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery. This particular print captures every intricate detail of Wilson's brushstrokes, allowing viewers to immerse themselves fully into the enchanting world he created centuries ago.
