Talatat: Portrait of Nefertiti, c. 1353-1347 BC (painted sandstone)

499509 Talatat: Portrait of Nefertiti, c.1353-1347 BC (painted sandstone)
by Egyptian 18th Dynasty (c.1567-1320 BC); 22x22.7 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: The son of Amenhotep III, Akenhaten, brought about the short-lived " monotheistic" revolution in Egyptian religion near the end of Dynasty XVIII. The young king constructed a temple complex to the Aten, the Sun Disk, at Karnak--from which these reliefs come--before he moved his capital to El Amarna. For reasons yet unknown, the figure of the Queen Nefertiti appears in these reliefs far more often that that of the king. Ironically, the Aten temples were dismantled anciently to be used as foundations and fill for additions to the Great Temple of Amun, whom the Aten had briefly displaced.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Talatat: Portrait of Nefertiti, a masterpiece from ancient Egypt's 18th Dynasty. Created between 1353-1347 BC, this painted sandstone artwork measures 22x22.7 cm and is housed in the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The portrait depicts Queen Nefertiti, wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep IV (also known as Akhenaten). During his reign, Akhenaten introduced a short-lived religious revolution that focused on worshipping only one god - Aten, the Sun Disk. The reliefs from which this artwork originates were part of a temple complex dedicated to Aten at Karnak before the capital was moved to El Amarna. Interestingly, despite being created during Akhenaten's rule, Nefertiti appears more frequently than her husband in these reliefs. The reasons behind this preference remain unknown but add an intriguing layer to the historical narrative. Sadly, over time, the Aten temples were dismantled and repurposed as foundations for additions to the Great Temple of Amun - whom Aten had temporarily displaced. This relic serves as a testament to both Nefertiti's prominence and the shifting tides within Egyptian religion during that era. With its intricate details and profound historical significance, Talatat: Portrait of Nefertiti offers viewers a glimpse into ancient Egypt's rich cultural heritage and invites contemplation about power dynamics and religious transformations during one of history's most fascinating periods.
