The cinema where there are no cinema (colour litho)

2808831 The cinema where there are no cinema (colour litho) by Beltrame, Achille (1871-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: The cinema where there are no cinemas. In order to carry out a healthy work of social education among the peasants, almost every day the National Propaganda Office departs from Milan a film truck that goes to give instructive outdoor shows in distant villages, where the brand new Thespis Chariot always receives festive welcome. The show takes place in front of an audience that, in a very large majority, ignored the cinema; and it is not uncommon to find among the spectators, especially in the mountains, old farmers who do not had they ever seen a truck. The Cinema Where There Are No Cinemas

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment in history when the magic of cinema reached even the most remote corners of Italy's countryside. In this vibrant scene, we witness the arrival of the Thespis Chariot, a film truck that brought educational and entertaining shows to distant villages. The enthusiasm is palpable as villagers gather around the colorful cart, eagerly awaiting their first cinematic experience. Among them are old farmers who had never before laid eyes on such a modern marvel as a moving picture truck. The crowd includes families, children, men, and women - all captivated by the prospect of witnessing this new form of entertainment. As Achille Beltrame's illustration for Courier Sunday in 1919 beautifully depicts, this mobile cinema was not just about entertainment; it served as an important tool for social education among peasants. It brought knowledge and enlightenment to those who may have otherwise been deprived of such experiences. The image exudes joy and excitement with its bright colors and animated expressions. The waving hands and cheering faces reflect both curiosity and patriotism towards this emerging technology. Through this photograph, we glimpse into a time when cinema became more than just movies; it became a means to bridge gaps between urban cities and rural landscapes. Beltrame's artwork immortalizes an era where film trucks like Thespis Chariot were symbols of progress and cultural exchange. This print serves as a reminder that sometimes innovation can bring people together in unexpected ways – even where there are no cinemas.
