EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Rifleman of the 4th Gurkha Regiment in marching order, dating back to 1890. Created by Alfred Crowdy Lovett, this watercolour painting beautifully captures the essence of a brave soldier named Chanda Singh Gurung. Adorned with his well-deserved campaign medals, including the prestigious 2nd Afghan War Medal from 1878-80 and the Kabul to Kandahar Star from 1880, Rifleman Chanda Singh Gurung stands tall and proud. Armed with a Snider-Enfield rifle, he represents the strength and dedication of the regiment during that era. The attention to detail in Lovett's artwork is remarkable; every brushstroke brings life to this historical moment frozen in time. Originally featured in "A Types of the Bengal Army" published by "The Graphic" on March 8th, 1890, this watercolour has found its place at London's National Army Museum. It serves as a testament to not only the bravery and sacrifice of individual soldiers like Rifleman Chanda Singh Gurung but also pays homage to an entire regiment that saw extensive service on both India's North West and North East Frontiers. As we gaze upon this portrait today, we are reminded of their unwavering commitment towards protecting their homeland.
