EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Bull Calf Polemount, a remarkable sculpture dating back to around 2700 BC. Crafted by Sumerians, this basalt artwork measures 7.7x5.1x13.1 cm and is currently housed in the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The Bull Calf Polemount holds great significance as it was once an object of worship within a temple during ancient Mesopotamian times. This small bull statue features intricate details that were originally adorned with contrasting colored stones or bone, such as its eyes, the triangle on its forehead, and the stripes on its rope collar. While these delicate inlays have been lost over time, this sculpture itself stands as one of the few surviving original cult statues from that era. Its historical value cannot be overstated. Through this image captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, we are transported back thousands of years to witness a tangible piece of ancient civilization's religious practices and artistic mastery. The seated cow-like figure exudes both power and serenity simultaneously. As we admire this mesmerizing artifact from Iraq's rich cultural heritage, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also the profound spiritual connection it once held for those who worshipped at its feet centuries ago.
