Draisinenfahren / Handcar Driving (colour litho)

8666244 Draisinenfahren / Handcar Driving (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Draisinenfahren. Translation: Handcar Driving. The draisine is not really the bicycle, but rather the romantic seated scooter. The draisine (named after its inventor Karl von Drais, who first constructed it in Mannheim in 1817) is the old wooden wheel without cranks. The rider sat on a saddle-like seat and moved forward by alternately kicking two planks connected to the wheels. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour lithograph captures the essence of Draisinenfahren, or Handcar Driving, a nostalgic mode of transportation from the Romantic era. Created by Georges Colomb in 1934, this illustration showcases the draisine - a precursor to the bicycle invented by Karl von Drais in 1817. The draisine featured in this print is a wooden wheel without pedals, with the rider seated on a saddle-like seat and propelling themselves forward by kicking two connected planks. This unique form of locomotion evokes a sense of simplicity and freedom that is characteristic of the Romantic period. The artist's attention to detail brings this historical scene to life, highlighting the ingenuity and charm of early transportation methods. The colourful palette adds vibrancy to the image, capturing the joy and excitement of handcar driving. This print serves as a visual reminder of an era when innovation and adventure went hand in hand. It invites viewers to step back in time and experience the thrill of riding a draisine through picturesque landscapes. A true masterpiece that celebrates both history and artistry.
