The Side

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Peter Petersen Toft is a captivating print that captures the essence of 19th-century Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In this artwork, Toft skillfully portrays a bustling city scene with intricate details and vibrant colors. The focal point of the image is the Dean Street Viaduct, an architectural marvel connecting two railway stations. A train gracefully traverses the viaduct, symbolizing progress and industrialization. Surrounding it are horse-drawn carts and pedestrians going about their daily lives, creating a lively atmosphere filled with movement. Toft's attention to detail is evident in his depiction of medieval buildings lining "The Side" some of which still exist today. These structures add a touch of history to the composition, reminding viewers of Newcastle's rich heritage. The artist's use of watercolor brings out the charm and character of this English cityscape. The delicate strokes capture not only architectural elements but also wildlife such as horses grazing nearby—a nod to rural life amidst urban development. Peter Petersen Toft was known for his small-scale paintings depicting old streets in Newcastle. His work provides us with glimpses into a bygone era, preserving moments in time that might have otherwise been forgotten. This print from Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate Toft's talent and transports us back to Victorian England—where trains roared across viaducts, carts rattled on cobblestone streets, and people went about their daily routines against an ever-changing backdrop of progress.
