The bridge was built in 1848 to connect the Newcastle and Berwick Railway line from Manors Station to the planned Central Station (opened 1850). Some of the medieval buildings that lined the Side can still be seen in this view. The original arch was later widened in 1894.Peter Toft (or Tofft) was a travelling Danish artist who was in Newcastle from 1879 to 1880.
