EDITORS COMMENTS
The Fifteenth Amendment. Celebrated May 19th, 1870" is a captivating print that captures the historic moment of the enactment of the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This vibrant color lithograph, created by James Carter Beard in 1871, showcases the grand celebratory parade held in Baltimore on May 19th, 1870. The central image depicts a procession crossing a lush green field with Baltimores Washington Monument towering in the background. Leading the parade is an ornate float adorned with four young women wearing crowns and sheltered by a canopy, drawn by four majestic white horses. Following closely behind are Zouave drummers and men donning top hats and sashes. Surrounding this lively scene are several vignettes that add depth to the narrative. In each upper corner, we find bust portraits of President Ulysses S. Grant and Vice President Schuyler S. Colfax, symbolizing their support for this groundbreaking amendment. Atop center stage stand three influential black leaders: Martin Robinson Delany, Frederick Douglass - renowned abolitionist and U. S marshal for District of Columbia - and Hiram Rhoades Revels - Mississippi senator. This commemorative print serves as both a visual celebration of progress towards racial equality and an homage to those who fought tirelessly for civil rights during this era. It reminds us of how far we have come as a nation while acknowledging that there is still work to be done in ensuring equal voting rights for all citizens regardless of race or previous servitude.
