EDITORS COMMENTS
Le Petit Saint-Jean, 1890 (pastel) by Edouard Manet and Berthe Morisot captures a serene moment in the French countryside of Mezy. In this pastel print, we see a young boy from the village serving as the model for a study of Saint John the Baptist with his cross. The artwork was created during springtime when Morisot and her husband rented a house overlooking the Seine River. Working in her attic studio, Morisot skillfully brings out the innocence and purity of the young boy through delicate strokes and soft colors. This particular piece is one of several studies for a full-length painting that unfortunately did not survive. However, it serves as an exquisite example of Manet's and Morisot's collaboration and their ability to capture fleeting moments with great sensitivity. The composition showcases Manet's mastery in capturing light and shadow while highlighting Morisot's talent for portraying human emotion. The pastoral setting adds depth to the scene, emphasizing both tranquility and spirituality. Displayed at Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this artwork exemplifies 19th-century French artistry at its finest. It stands as a testament to Manet's legacy as one of France's most celebrated painters while also recognizing Berthe Morisot's significant contributions to Impressionism. Through this print from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, viewers can appreciate not only the beauty within this specific piece but also gain insight into the artistic process behind creating masterpieces.
