from an episode in Samuel Butlers mock-heroic epic, " Hudibras, " shows the title character as he confronts the astrologer Sidrophel in a clandestine laboratory. Angry at the truths of his past which the astrologer has just revealed, Hudibras makes ready to draw his sword and attack. The scene is filled with details of the alchemical and occult works performed there: the astrologers charts lie open across the table, joined by a globe, map, and tools of navigation and astronomical observation on the floor. At left, a small glass jar contains a miniature human figure--likely a homunculus, a form of artificial life once considered possible. ); English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving by William Hogarth, titled "Hudibras beats Sidrophel and his man Whacum" transports us to a clandestine laboratory filled with esoteric wonders. Taken from Samuel Butler's mock-heroic epic poem, "Hudibras" the image depicts the protagonist confronting the astrologer Sidrophel after he reveals unsettling truths about Hudibras' past. The scene is rich in intricate details that hint at alchemy, astrology, and witchcraft. Astrological charts sprawl across the table alongside a globe, map, and tools of navigation. On the floor lies an astrological globe while stuffed animals adorn the shelves. A small glass jar contains what appears to be a homunculus—a miniature human figure—an intriguing symbol of artificial life once believed possible. Filled with anger and determination, Hudibras prepares to draw his sword as he confronts Sidrophel. The tension between them is palpable as they stand amidst this mystical setting. Hogarth's skillful illustration captures both the supernatural elements of magic and occult practices prevalent during this era. The attention to detail brings alive every aspect of this complex scene— from skeletal remains to a lurking crocodile. This print offers viewers a glimpse into 17th-century literature and its fascination with arcane knowledge. It serves as a reminder of how art can transport us into different worlds, immersing us in stories that blend reality with imagination.
