474064 At Dieppe, 1770 (w/c on paper)
by Grimm, Samuel Hieronymous (1733-94); 37.2x29.7 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: This picture was painted in 1770 in England, but would have been based on sketches that Grimm made a few years before, when he was living in France. The artist followed the usual w/c technique of the time by first establishing the shapes and shadows with pale grey washes, before adding a small amount of fairly subdued colour. It is likely that the sky was originally more blue, and that some green colours have faded. Grimm was originally a Swiss artist, who settled in Britain in 1768;

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "At Dieppe, 1770" by Samuel Hieronymous Grimm takes us back to the charming streets of 18th-century France. The artist's meticulous watercolor technique brings to life a picturesque scene filled with quaint cottages and bustling daily life. Grimm, originally from Switzerland but settled in Britain in 1768, captures the essence of Dieppe with remarkable detail. It is believed that this painting was based on sketches he made during his time living in France a few years prior. Using pale grey washes as a foundation, Grimm masterfully adds subtle yet evocative colors to create depth and atmosphere. The focal point of the composition is a horse-drawn carriage gracefully making its way through the cobblestone street. This glimpse into everyday life transports us back to a simpler time when horses were an essential mode of transportation. The surrounding cottages exude rustic charm, their facades adorned with vibrant flowers and ivy climbing up their walls. Although some fading has occurred over time, it only adds to the nostalgic allure of this piece. As we admire "At Dieppe, 1770" we are reminded of the enduring beauty found within historical landscapes and how art can transport us across centuries. Displayed at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, this artwork serves as a testament to Grimm's skillful craftsmanship and his ability to capture moments frozen in time for generations to appreciate.
