EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a side chair dating back to 1848, crafted by the renowned designer Michael Thonet. Made from bent solid beechwood with a woven cane seat, this elegant piece of furniture measures 86.7x40.8x42 cm and is currently housed in The Geffrye Museum of the Home in London, UK. The chair, known as Model No. 4, features a unique design that highlights Thonet's mastery of bentwood techniques. The backrest consists of two decorative scrolls made from bentwood, enclosed by a single arched piece that forms the top rail, back uprights, and back legs. The front legs subtly turn outwards at the feet and are adorned with simple turned decorations at their tops. Adding to its historical significance is a printed paper label attached to the inside of the seat rail which bears an inscription related to K. Kausschl. prisu (?) landesbef. Fabriken/massiv gebogener helz arbeiten/Von GebrAoder Thonet in Wien along with GT monograms. With its ornate detailing and expert craftsmanship, this side chair exemplifies both form and function. Its caned seat provides comfort while adding visual interest to any space it occupies. This photograph beautifully captures every intricate detail against a clean white background. As we admire this stunning piece from another era, we are reminded of how design has evolved over time while still drawing inspiration from classic styles like those created by Michael Thonet himself.
