EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning manuscript page from the 15th century. Titled "MS Widener 4, ff. 26v-27r, Coat of Arms and the Annunciation, from a Book of Hours" this exquisite piece is housed in the Free Library of Philadelphia's Rare Book Department. The artwork features two distinct elements: a coat of arms and a miniature depicting the Annunciation. The coat of arms represents Jean III, seigneur of Acigneand and Cordemai, who lived between 1430 and 1497. It symbolizes his noble lineage as the son of Jean II, seigneur of Acigneand Fontenay (1409-1462), and Catherine de Malestroit de Chateaugiron (d. 13 November 1434). Facing the coat of arms is an intricately painted miniature showcasing the Annunciation scene that initiates Matins in the Hours of the Virgin. This masterpiece was created by none other than LuAzon Master - one of France's most esteemed painters during that era. The manuscript itself dates back to approximately 1405 and bears Johannes Parvus' signature on f. 206v – also known as Jean Le Petit – who was its Breton scribe. Measuring at an impressive size of 21x29 cm, this photograph captures every intricate detail with pen & ink and tempera on vellum technique employed by French School artists. Bridgeman Images presents this remarkable image for art enthusiasts to appreciate its historical significance without any commercial use intentions mentioned or associated with it.
