EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print showcases the exquisite beauty of two species of birds, Spermestes Nigriceps (male and female) and Spermestes Fuscans. Created by William E. Hitchcock in 1850, this artwork measures 21x14.5 cm and is currently housed in the Free Library of Philadelphia. The print originally appeared in the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia's second series, Volume 3, Plate 8. These prints were meticulously hand-colored when bound together. The taxonomic names assigned to these birds were given by John Cassin, a renowned American ornithologist who served as head of the bird department at the Academy of Natural Sciences. In this lithograph, we are presented with an enchanting male and female Red-backed Mannikin (Spermestes nigriceps), alongside a striking Dusky Mannikin (Spermestes fuscans). The intricate details captured by J. T. Bowen's lithographic establishment bring these avian wonders to life. This remarkable piece from the Jackson Collection of American Lithographs offers us a glimpse into nature's diversity and serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic craftsmanship. As we admire this timeless artwork, let us appreciate its contribution to our understanding and appreciation for Earth's rich biodiversity.
