EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The small Bittern, 1749-73" transports us back to the world of natural history exploration in the 18th century. Created by Mark Catesby and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print showcases a delicate portrayal of the smallest species of bittern known as Ardea stellaris minima. The image captures the essence of these elusive birds with remarkable precision and attention to detail. The vibrant colors bring life to their feathers, while every stroke reveals their intricate patterns. As we gaze upon this artwork, we can almost hear the soft rustling of marsh grasses and feel the tranquility that surrounds them. Originally part of George Edwards' renowned works on uncommon birds, Seligmann's re-engraving combines Catesby's contributions from "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" with German translations and additional figures not found in the originals. This collaboration between two talented artists adds depth and uniqueness to an already extraordinary piece. "The small Bittern" stands as a testament to humanity's fascination with nature's wonders throughout history. It serves as a reminder that even in our modern age, there is still much beauty waiting to be discovered within our natural world. This print invites us to appreciate both its artistic merit and scientific significance – a true treasure for any lover of birds or admirer of fine art alike.
