EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The small American Redstart, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print has been re-engraved by Seligmann to combine elements from Catesby's work on the natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Displayed against a backdrop of lush foliage and delicate flowers, the small American Redstart takes center stage with its vibrant plumage. Its fiery red tail feathers contrast beautifully with its jet-black body, creating a striking visual spectacle. The intricate details captured in this engraving highlight both the artistic skill of the illustrators and the remarkable beauty found in nature. Seligmann's translation of names into German adds an international flair to this piece while also incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the original works. This fusion creates a unique blend that appeals to both bird enthusiasts and art lovers alike. As we gaze upon this enchanting illustration, we are transported back to a time when explorers documented new species with awe-inspired wonder. Through their meticulous engravings, Edwards and Seligmann have immortalized these extraordinary creatures for generations to come.
