EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Greatest Bulfinch-Hen, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this print has been re-engraved by Seligmann, combining elements from Catesby's work on natural history. The image depicts a stunning female Rubicilla maxima canadensis, commonly known as the Bulfinch-Hen. Its vibrant plumage and intricate details are brought to life through the skilful use of colours and precise engravings. Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg, adds his own touch to this masterpiece by translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations.
