The Surrender of the Two Sons of Tipu Sahib (1749-99), Sultan of Mysore, to Sir David Baird, c. 1800

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history - the surrender of the two sons of Tipu Sahib, the last independent sultan of Mysore, to General Sir David Baird and his British troops. Painted by Henry Singleton in oil on canvas, this artwork measures 43.2x53.3 cm and is housed at the Yale Center for British Art. The scene depicted here takes us back to May 4th, 1799 when General Baird led a fierce attack on the southern Indian city of Mysore. Amidst the chaos and violence that ensued during battle, Tipu Sahib met his untimely demise. His death marked not only a turning point in this colonial war but also signified the final consolidation of British rule in India. In this painting, we witness an emotional moment as Tipu Sahib's two sons reluctantly surrender to their conquerors. The expressions on their faces reveal a mix of resignation and defiance against colonization. Through Singleton's brushstrokes, we are transported back to the 18th century Raj era where soldiers from opposing sides clashed for power and control over vast territories. This artwork serves as a poignant reminder of both triumphs and tragedies that shaped India's history under British rule.
