EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning bowl with cranes and clouds, created by the Korean School in the 12th century. The celadon-glazed stoneware measures at 6.5x19.5x19.5 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The craftsmanship of this piece is truly remarkable. Made from thrown stoneware, it features intricate black and white slip inlay work as well as a celadon glaze that adds an elegant touch to its appearance. The shallow rounded bowl stands on a low footring, while the inside is adorned with a medallion depicting two cranes with entwined necks, surrounded by six cranes soaring among clouds and bordered by youi-head motifs. On the outside of the bowl, four peony-spray medallions are set within scrollwork against a background of inlaid black slip. This decorative design is enclosed between classic-scroll rim borders and a petal border below. The base bears traces of three quartzite spurs, indicating its ancient origins. Additionally, there are gilt repairs along the rim which add to its historical significance. This exquisite ceramic artwork not only exemplifies East Asian aesthetics but also serves as evidence of Korea's rich artistic heritage during the Koryo Dynasty period (918-1392). Its ornate decoration captures elements of nature such as cranes and clouds while showcasing exceptional skill in ceramics production.
