Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for HMSO
Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print titled "Isles of Scilly, from the series Home Bulbs for Home Gardens" takes us on a visual journey to the picturesque Isles of Scilly. The artist behind this colorful lithograph is A. A. Moores, who created it in the 1920s as part of a commission by the Empire Marketing Board. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this artwork is just one piece from their remarkable collection of artist-designed posters commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The board aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. The poster campaign featured over 200 visually striking images that showcased various aspects of life within the empire – its people, places, and products. However, viewing these posters today can raise uncomfortable questions about colonial legacies and beliefs held during that time. Despite these complexities, this particular litho transports viewers to an idyllic scene in Isles of Scilly with its lush greenery and blooming flowers. It serves as a reminder not only of nature's beauty but also highlights how art can reflect historical contexts and societal values. As we admire this stunning print captured by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Manchester Art Gallery, let us appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and recognize the broader narratives it represents within our shared history.
