EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a Mauser C96 7.63 mm pistol, dating back to 1898. This German semi-automatic pistol holds historical significance as it was carried by several British officers during the famous charge at Omdurman on September 2,1898, in the midst of the Second Sudan War (1896-1898). Notably, Lieutenant Winston Churchill himself purchased this very model in London before embarking on his African expedition. What made this pistol particularly favored among its users was its exceptional power and ability to fire ten shots before needing to be reloaded – four more than the standard revolver used by the British Army at that time. Additionally, its box magazine and wooden holster served a dual purpose as a shoulder stock, giving it an unmistakable and unique style. This particular print is housed at the National Army Museum in London and belongs to their collection. It offers us a glimpse into history when firearms played a crucial role in military operations. The image showcases not only the craftsmanship of this weapon but also serves as a reminder of how technological advancements can shape warfare tactics throughout different eras.
