By the time the Boer War (1899-1902) reached its guerilla phase the Boer commandos were running desperately short of ammunition for their Mauser weapons. As they had captured many Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield weapons the burghers began using them in greater numbers. They were familiar with Lee-Metford rifles, many commercial models of which had been imported into South Africa before the War. They obtained ammunition either by capturing it from supply wagons or by following British columns and picking up the ammunition which they dropped. This print showcases a Lee-Metford Mk II . 303 inch rifle, used by the Boer forces during the tumultuous times of 1901. The English School from the 19th century beautifully captured this relic, now housed in the National Army Museum in London. During the later stages of the Boer War, when guerrilla warfare became prevalent, ammunition scarcity plagued the Boer commandos armed with Mauser weapons. In dire need of firepower, they turned to their vast collection of captured Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield rifles. These firearms were not unfamiliar to them as many commercial models had been imported into South Africa prior to the war. The resourceful burghers acquired ammunition through various means - seizing it from supply wagons or scavenging dropped rounds left behind by British columns. This particular rifle on display bears unique carved decorations commonly found on firearms owned by these skilled marksmen. Through this photograph, we are transported back in time to witness a significant moment in history where necessity forced adversaries to adapt and utilize whatever weaponry was available at hand. The resilience and ingenuity displayed by both sides during this conflict is truly remarkable.
