EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a detailed view of the Monument to Leon Gambetta, located in the Force courtyard of the Louvre in 1888. The monument was created by Jean Paul Aube and Louis Charles Boileau as a tribute to Gambetta, a French Republican statesman known for his advocacy of human rights. In this particular detail, we see an allegorical female statue seated on a stone pedestal. She is depicted half-nude with draped drapery, exuding grace and elegance. The statue symbolizes the embodiment of Human Rights, reflecting Gambetta's commitment to championing equality and justice. The black-and-white photograph taken by Adolphe Giraudon in the late 19th century adds a timeless quality to this historical artwork. It showcases the intricate craftsmanship of Aube's bronze and stone sculpture while capturing its grandeur within the cour Napoleon. Unfortunately, during World War II under Vichy Government rule, the bronze components of the monument were melted down for military purposes. As a result, it was removed from its original location in 1954. However, hope was not lost for this significant piece of art as it was rebuilt in 1982 at Square Edouard Vaillant in Paris' 20th arrondissement. Today, it stands as a powerful reminder of Leon Gambetta's legacy and his unwavering dedication to upholding human rights values throughout France's history.
