EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful lithograph captures the dramatic final destruction of Carthage by the Romans, a pivotal moment in ancient history. The scene depicts Hasdrubal, who had managed to escape the city, kneeling before Scipio and begging for his life. Despite granting him mercy, Scipio parades Hasdrubal as a prisoner before the surviving Carthaginians who had sought refuge in the temple of Aesculapius. The image is filled with intense emotion as Hasdrubal's wife appears on the burning roof of the temple and curses her husband before tragically throwing herself into the flames. The desperation and despair of this moment are palpable, highlighting the brutal consequences of war and conquest. Through intricate detailing and expert composition, artist Robert Ambrose Dudley brings this historical event to life with striking clarity. The black-and-white contrast adds depth and intensity to each figure and element within the scene. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of conflict and serves as a testament to both human resilience and tragedy. It is a haunting portrayal that will leave viewers contemplating the complexities of warfare and its lasting impact on civilizations throughout history.
