EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Megalus Cassinii, litho by J. T. Bowen, 1850" captures the exquisite beauty of nature's avian wonders. This lithograph, created by William E. Hitchcock and housed in the Free Library of Philadelphia, is a testament to the artistry and scientific contributions of John Cassin. Cassin, an esteemed American ornithologist and head of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia during the mid-19th century, collaborated with J. T. Bowen's renowned lithographic establishment to produce these stunning prints for the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences. In this particular image from Volume 2, Plate 6 & 4, we are presented with two distinct species: on the left-hand page is a captivating Cassins Auklet (Mergulus Cassinii), known for its webbed feet and graceful presence; while on the right-hand page stands a White-throated Screech Owl (Syrnium Albogularis), exuding an air of mystery with its piercing gaze. These hand-colored prints not only showcase Hitchcock's artistic talent but also serve as important taxonomic references thanks to Cassin's expertise in bird classification. As we admire this remarkable piece from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, we are reminded that art can be both aesthetically pleasing and scientifically valuable – capturing moments in time that allow us to appreciate our natural world even more deeply.
