3051683 Model sailing boat from the Tomb of Khety (Beni Hasan) Middle Kingdom, c.2010 B.C. - 1950 B.C. (painted wood and linen) by Egyptian 12th Dynasty (1991-1786 BC); 25x59x12 cm; Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, UK; (add.info.: When model boats were placed in tombs, there were usually two, one for sailing upstream (sails up) the other for rowing downstream. Some of the difficulties of navigating the waters of the Nile can be seen in the actions of the crews. On both boats, pilots stand on the bow and originally they may have held something with which to test the depth of the water. On the sailing boat, two men lean on long poles to push off and help the boat through the shallows. The steering mechanisms can clearly be seen on both models. ); eFitzwilliam Museum; Egyptian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable model sailing boat from the Tomb of Khety in Beni Hasan, dating back to the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt around 2010 B. C. Crafted with painted wood and linen, this exquisite piece is currently housed at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge in the UK. Intriguingly, when these model boats were placed in tombs, they were often accompanied by two vessels - one for sailing upstream with its sails up and another for rowing downstream. These models provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by sailors navigating the waters of the Nile during that time period. The attention to detail on both boats is truly remarkable. The pilots are depicted standing on the bow, possibly holding instruments to measure water depth. On the sailing boat, two men can be seen leaning on long poles to navigate through shallow areas. The steering mechanisms are clearly visible on both models as well. This artifact not only serves as a testament to ancient Egyptian craftsmanship but also offers a glimpse into their maritime traditions and practices. It stands as a tangible link between our modern world and an era long past – a true treasure preserved for generations to come.
