EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and detailed coloured engraving captures the beauty and diversity of commercial plants from the 19th century. The print, titled "Commercial Plants" showcases a selection of botanical wonders that were highly valued for their economic significance. In the foreground, we see the smooth Sassafras tree with its distinctive leaves and aromatic bark. Next to it stands the majestic Carob tree, known for its delicious pods that have been used as a natural sweetener since ancient times. These two specimens exemplify nature's bounty in providing resources for various industries. Further back in the image, we encounter Glycyrrhiza glabra, commonly known as liquorice or licorice plant. Its roots contain a compound called glycyrrhizin which is widely used in confectionery, herbal medicine, and even beverages. The meticulous attention to detail in this engraving allows us to appreciate both the artistic skill of German School artists from centuries ago and also serves as an educational tool about these important commercial plants. This particular print comes from Friedrich Justin Bertuch's renowned "Picture Book for Children" published between 1790-1830. Now preserved within a private collection but made available through Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder platform, this artwork offers us a glimpse into our historical relationship with nature's gifts and reminds us of how essential plants have always been to human civilization.
