His Royal Highness William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (mezzotint)

5928726 His Royal Highness William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (mezzotint) by Reynolds, Joshua (1723-92); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: His Royal Highness William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland.
Mezzotint by Charles Spooner after Joshua Reynolds, nd.
Published by John Bowles at the Black Horse, Cornhill and Carington Bowles, St Pauls Church Yard, London, 1745 (c).
Cumberland was the third and favourite son of King George II. In April 1743, during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), he accompanied his father to Hanover and saw action at the Battle of Dettingen, where he was wounded in the leg. In 1745, he commanded the Allied army against the French in the desperate Battle of Fontenoy where, ignoring advice, he attacked a strongly-defended position, losing the day with heavy casualties.
When Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in Scotland, Cumberland was hastily recalled from the Low Countries to take command of the Kings forces. On 27 April 1746 (Modern Calendar; 16 April 1746 Old Style), he crushed the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden.
Convinced that harsh measures were required to suppress the uprising, Cumberland then instructed his men to search cottages for rebels, plundering cattle and burning homesteads. Reports of such atrocities soon earned him the nickname of the Butcher, but he remained Captain-General of the Army until 1757, presiding over a number of important military reforms. His disgrace followed the making an unwise truce with the French in Germany.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This mezzotint print showcases the esteemed figure of His Royal Highness William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. Created by renowned artist Joshua Reynolds and reproduced by Charles Spooner, this artwork captures the noble presence and commanding aura of the Duke. William Augustus, the third son of King George II, was a prominent military leader during his time. The print depicts him in all his regal glory, adorned in his distinguished uniform. It serves as a testament to his valiant efforts on the battlefield and his unwavering dedication to serving his country. The image also provides insight into some pivotal moments in history. From fighting alongside his father at the Battle of Dettingen to leading Allied forces against the French at Fontenoy, Cumberland's military prowess is evident. However, it was perhaps at Culloden where he left an indelible mark on history. Crushing Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite rebellion with ruthless efficiency earned him both admiration and infamy. Despite being dubbed "the Butcher" due to reports of harsh measures taken against rebels after Culloden, Cumberland remained Captain-General of the Army for over a decade and implemented significant military reforms. This print not only commemorates an influential historical figure but also offers viewers a glimpse into a tumultuous period marked by war and political upheaval. With its intricate details and powerful portrayal, this artwork is truly a treasure that invites contemplation upon one man's complex legacy.
