EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The yellow breasted Chat" a stunning colored engraving created by Mark Catesby in the years 1749-73. The artwork, now part of a private collection, is an exquisite collaboration between Catesby and German engraver Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by George Edwards, this piece was featured in his works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History". However, Seligmann took on the task of re-engraving the plates and combining them with Catesby's renowned work titled "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann's contribution to this masterpiece involved translating names into German while also adding additional figures and plants that were absent from the original engravings. This fusion resulted in a unique representation that beautifully captures both artistic styles. "The yellow breasted Chat" itself is a remarkable portrayal of nature's beauty. The vibrant colors bring life to this bird species known as Oenanthe americana pectore luteo. Its distinctive yellow breast stands out against its surroundings, making it an enchanting subject for any admirer of birds or natural history. This print serves as a testament to the talent and dedication displayed by these esteemed artists. It allows us to appreciate their efforts in preserving and sharing our natural world through artistry for generations to come.
