EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The little American Water Hen" transports us back to the 18th century when George Edwards first created this masterpiece. The print showcases the remarkable talent of Michael Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer who re-engraved Edwards' original plates. "The little American Water Hen" is part of a larger body of work called "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History". Seligmann combined these engravings with the works of Mark Catesby in "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" adding his own touch by translating names into German and including additional figures and plants not found in the originals. In this particular image, we see Gallinula minor canadensis, commonly known as the little American water hen. Its vibrant plumage stands out against a backdrop that hints at its natural habitat. This illustration serves as both an artistic representation and an educational tool for those interested in birds, animals, or natural history. Now preserved within a private collection, this print allows us to appreciate the meticulous detail captured by Seligmann's hand. It reminds us that art has no boundaries; it transcends time and language barriers to connect people across generations through their shared appreciation for beauty found in nature's creations.
