EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The large Green and Spotted Lizard" created by George Edwards in 1749-73. The coloured engraving, now part of a private collection, is a testament to the artistic talent and scientific curiosity of its time. Originally engraved by George Edwards himself, this work was later re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with the renowned naturalist Mark Catesby's illustrations from "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". In doing so, he translated the names into German while adding some additional figures and plants not present in the originals. The result is a stunning depiction of this magnificent reptile - Lacertus major viridis coeruleo maculatur occidentalis. The intricate details captured in this engraving highlight both its beauty and unique characteristics. It serves as a valuable resource for those interested in reptiles, birds, animals, or natural history. Preserved through time thanks to ePurix Verlag Volker Christen's efforts, this print allows us to appreciate the skillful craftsmanship that went into creating such an exquisite piece of artwork. Its historical significance lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its contribution to our understanding of these fascinating creatures.
